( English follows below )

What is your image of culture? For example, you may imagine that taking your shoes off when you go into your house is a part of Japanese culture. Defining culture is difficult. However, we realize that culture is not an only visible action. Invisible ones, such as economy or politics are also key elements of culture. We understand invisible cultural differences only after you study a lot or create a deeper relationship with people. On our study trip to Vietnam this coming September, we might face a variety of cultural differences, so we should study their culture in advance to be able to adapt ourselves to their culture.

We have been preparing for different events, such as lecture session by guest speakers in May June, and TKU English Fair in June. We will also hold a two-day intensive training camp in June.
We’re looking forward to meeting you at our events. Detailed information will be available on our Facebook page and this blog page. We’ll keep you posted!

(English follows below)

On the second day, each seminar member introduced himself/herself as we do every year.
Here are the details below.

1. Self-Introduction
We were given assignments last week that was to make an interesting self-introduction. We were given three minutes per person. It was very interesting to see everyone has all different backgrounds or interests. Some members used beautiful pictures in their slides and tried to speak English during their presentations. The most interesting and unique hobby introduced by one of our members was visiting and taking pictures of statues of Buddha. I hadn’t ever met a person who loves it so much, so it was interesting.

2. A lecture by professor Seki
The topic of the lecture by professor Seki was about communication systems. Professor Seki showed us the illustration that explains how messages are delivered from a sender to a receiver of the message. When we tell messages to people, there are many obstacles, so we sometimes get the wrong idea. We felt it is difficult to tell our messages to others correctly.

3. English vocabulary test
We took English vocabulary test. First, we filled in blank space, then we read the sentences completely. Everyone studied very hard for the test.

After the class, we held a dinner party at 6 café that is near the south exit of Kokubunji station. We talked a lot and played the party game. There was a lot of fun, so I thought the party was too short.
The fun time with the members made me excited for this year ahead.

(English follows below)

Seki Seminar 2018 has finally begun! This year, the seminar is composed of 10 members, including 4 continuing students from last year, three new juniors, and two new sophomores. One of the biggest differences between the seminar members in 2017 and in 2018 is the ratio of Japanese students and international students. Half of the seminar members 2017 were international students, but this year, all students are Japanese.
We already decided to go to Vietnam for a 2-week overseas study trip in September. The theme of the program is poverty and education. To prepare for it, it is quite important for us to practice English hard so that we can work together with Vietnamese university students during the program. We will keep going.
