(English follows below)

Reflection on TKU Seki Seminar (5) "The Importance of Learning On-site"

I have belonged Seki Seminar for two years and learned so many important things in life. In this short article, I would like to tell you the importance of ‘learning on-site.’

In 2016, we stayed in Vietnam for two weeks as a seminar oversea program. In the program, we had an opportunity to meet Mr. Duc Nguyen, the living witness of the Vietnam War. (Click here for the detailed information about Mr.Duc) https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2007/10/07/national/separated-vietnamese-conjoined-twin-dies/#.WrH2IKjFLIU
During the Vietnam War, the US military used defoliants and left a lot of serious damages to the people in Vietnam. However, because the the Vietnam War ended more than 40 years ago, I thought that the damage of defoliants was over. Therefore I was shocked when he told us that the influence of defoliant still exists. Even now, 3 percent of newborn babies are badly affected by defoliants.

Nowadays, you can get information easily by the internet. However, I think getting information from the intert is not enough to fully understand the situation. The essential thing to understand stories is to visit the places and listen to a real voice from people there.

Seki seminar taught us the importance of learning onsite to understand things around us more deeply and correctly.

(English follows below)

Reflection on TKU Seki Seminar (4) “Connection with people beyond the border”

We met thousands of people through this Seki seminar for a year. Not only in the university but also all over the world especially in Asian countries. This entire year, we felt the “connection” of people.

The first “connection” was the member of Seki seminar. We have been cooperated preparing for many events that we had done so far. We always supported each other at difficult times. Also, we shared the happiest moments together.

Secondly, through our seminar oversea program, we met a lot of wonderful local students, coordinators who supported our program, the kind host families, and the warm-hearted villagers.
Especially, we built up a deep relationship with the Nepali students who participated in the Mero Sathi Project together with us.
We worked hard for so many activities and had chatted about silly things. We also discussed different topics until late in the evening and spent all the time together for 2 weeks. On the last day, it was hard to say good bye... But we promised to see each other again.
To think about “connection”, to meet with Mr.Seki was the beginning of this whole year. If we didn’t meet him, we couldn’t have had such amazing experiences throughout the year.

Seki seminar opened our eyes to the world. Thanks to the seminar we were connected with so many people with a variety of nationalities, cultures, and senses of value, and genders.

(English follows below)

Reflection on TKU Seki Seminar (3) “Such Precious Friends”

Last year was a very satisfying year for me. My university life became so much better thanks to Seki Seminar. I’m sure I will never forget the experiences we shared together.

I was appointed as a leader of the seminar. In this role, I tried my best to maintain a positive and fun environment for all of the seminar students. Our classes were held during fifth and sixth periods, so we were already tired. For this reason, I tried to help other members enjoy our classes.

Since we were from different countries, had different cultures, and didn’t know each other, it was challenging for me to get everyone on the same page at the beginning of the semester. As time passed, we had gradually become closer. What I was trying to do in the first semester was to make everyone feel comfortable. As part of this effort, I tried not to be too strict.

In the first semester, we learned a variety of cross-cultural study models. It wasn’t a lecture –based classes; seminar members actively participated through deep discussion. We were able to learn about overcoming culture shock, which is something that I had never thought I would study in university. Although what we were studying seemed extremely difficult, we understood it in the end.

During the summer vacation, we visited Nepal and spent two weeks with local students. We never experienced eating, sleeping, and socializing with Nepalese students. By overcoming the challenges we faced, such as rural village life, teaching an impromptu class, and understanding our cultural differences, the seminar students built a bond with each other as well as the Nepali members.

During the first semester, before going to Nepal, we learned only in an academic setting, about overcoming cultural differences. In Nepal, however, I was able to practice what I had learned. As we became closer, we expressed ourselves more honestly. I found that we had different perspectives, but I was able to accept and understand these differences by applying what we had learned in our class before the trip. Although accepting and respecting different perspectives is challenging, it’s extremely important to build a global partnership.

In the second semester, I was a bit strict with the other members because we had to work very hard for the big events at JICA in Nov, as well as different presentations. I wouldn’t have been able to be strict if it had not been for our strong relationships. The seminar members were always on my side. Our relationships became so strong that we could stop avoiding our true selves and find enjoyable working with each other for a year

Although we faced so many challenging situations, we were able to finish the year with big smiles. I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you all for everything.
