関ゼミ2017の振り返り（５）現場で学ぶことの大切さ

私は2年間このゼミに所属した。私が皆さんに伝えたいこと、それは「先入観で物事を判断せず、現場で本物を見ることの大切さ」である。

私は一昨年前の夏、海外ゼミ研修でベトナムに赴いた。そこで、私はベトナム戦争の生き証人グエン・ドク氏（日本ではベトちゃん、ドクちゃんとして知られている）にお話を聞く機会があった。ベトナム戦争では、アメリカ軍が枯葉剤を使用して、ベトナム国民に多くの被害を残したことで有名だ。

ベトナム戦争は40年以上前に終わった。だから、私は枯葉剤の被害も終わったと思い込んでいた。しかし、ドクさんのお話を聞いて、その影響は現代でも続いていると知った。今日でも枯葉剤の影響を受けた子供が生まれてくるということである。その確率は3％である。私は強い衝撃を受けた。

現代は、インターネットなどが普及している。だから、多くの情報を容易に手に入れられる。だが、それらの情報は非常に表面的である。物事を完璧に理解するために不可欠なのは、実際に現地に訪れること。そして、当事者から生の声を聞くことである。

私も、今後は本やインターネットだけの情報に満足をせず、行動も起こして、より深い理解を得ようと思う。

Reflection on TKU Seki Seminar (5) "The Importance of Learning On-site"

I have belonged Seki Seminar for two years and learned so many important things in life. In this short article, I would like to tell you the importance of ‘learning on-site.’

In 2016, we stayed in Vietnam for two weeks as a seminar oversea program. In the program, we had an opportunity to meet Mr. Duc Nguyen, the living witness of the Vietnam War.  During the Vietnam War, the US military used defoliants and left a lot of serious damages to the people in Vietnam. However, because the the Vietnam War ended more than 40 years ago, I thought that the damage of defoliants was over. Therefore I was shocked when he told us that the influence of defoliant still exists. Even now, 3 percent of newborn babies are badly affected by defoliants.

Nowadays, you can get information easily by the internet. However, I think getting information from the intert is not enough to fully understand the situation. The essential thing to understand stories is to visit the places and listen to a real voice from people there.

Seki seminar taught us the importance of learning onsite to understand things around us more deeply and correctly.
