ネパール支援家、垣見一雅（ＯＫバジ）氏からの便り A letter from OK Baji in Nepal

昨年、AAEEと関ゼミが合同で行ったMero　Sathi Projectで集まった支援金をネパールで長年貧困支援に取り組み、以前関ゼミでも何度もご講演いただいているOKバジさんに託しました。その支援金がネパールの辺境の地チムダーダ村に2019年3月6日に開設された幼児教室のために使われました。昨年7月11日に託した26,937円で、教室のマットと絨毯、テーブルを購入したそうです。今まで学校がなかったこの地域では小学校低学年の子供たちは教育を受けることができなかったそうです。この学校のおかげで、ようやく初等教育が実現します。

日本で暮らす私たちにとって学校があり勉強できることは当たり前ですが、そうではない人たち、支援を必要とする人たちも世界中にはたくさんいます。国連SDGsゴール４「質の高い教育を世界のみんなに」些細ではありますが、私たちができる範囲で貢献していきたいと思います。(文責：西澤　朱里）

As you may know, Seki Seminar has engaged in supportive activities for poor people and poor communities in Nepal for the last 10 years. Then right after a strong earthquake hit the country 4 years ago, we started a fundraising activity called Mero Sati Project (‘Mero Sati’ is ‘My Friend’ in English), together with AAEE, Asia Association of Education and Exchange.   

Last year, we left the donation to OK Baji (Mr. Kazumasa Kakimi) who has been supporting poor people in Nepal for the last 20 years. The donations were used for an elementary school which was built last March. The money was spent on a floor mat, a carpet, and desks in the school classrooms. Surprisingly, there had been no school around that area until this year! We couldn’t believe it.

To us who live in Japan, it is nothing special that we study in school. However, in the world, there are so many people who are still in need of getting even basic school education. Therefore, we think it our duty to contribute to the SDGs goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all!（written by Akari Nishizawa)

2019年度 関昭典ゼミ開幕！

   お待たせしました！
　2019年度関ゼミがスタートしました。初回の授業は何と関先生の研究室でピザやチョコレートを食べながらアットホームな雰囲気で行われました。大学の授業でしかも初回でピザやチョコには驚かされました。内容は主に今年度の活動内容の確認。関ゼミにはゼミ生以外部外秘のマル秘資料があることを今回初めて知らされました。関ゼミの活動は、突発的に見えて超綿密に練られています！

　今年度はなんとゼミ生がわずか5名。関ゼミ史上２番目の少人数ゼミです。しかし選考を通過したゼミ生は最強です！間もなく日本は「令和」時代に突入しますが、関ゼミも昨年度とは全く違う「新時代」の幕開けです。今後の活動がとても楽しみです！
また夏の研修はネパールとタイで行われることがほぼ決定しました（「ほぼ」という表現が気になりますが）。英語の個人学習含め、個々のゼミ生が力をつけ、結果として関ゼミのクオリティが上がっていけばいいと思います。

 そして！ゼミの授業開始前に、関先生の前任校である新潟県立大学（旧県立新潟女子短期大学）の元教え子のお二方がいらっしゃいました。卒業後以来の再会ということで、関先生は2時間以上質問攻めになさったそうです。
お二方の経歴をざっくりと紹介します。

金子愛理さん（写真右）
卒業後、JICA関連の動物愛護ボランティアをサモアでし、その後JICA青年海外協力隊に合格しガボン共和国派遣が内定するも愛犬介護のために辞退されました。
数年後に再び合格しインドネシアで二年間廃棄物処理業務に取り組み、その縁で帰国後は九州の企業に就職して六年間、一年の大半をインドネシアで暮らす生活をしているそうです。今は仕事の傍ら博士号取得に向けて最終段階だそうです。

卒業後、なんと財務省に就職。周囲から羨望の的でしたが、霞が関で待ち受けていたのはとても過酷な日々だったそうです。財務事務次官室秘書アシスタント、財務副大臣室秘書、国際部に所属し、一見華やかな部署ではあるものの体力的にも精神的にも激務だったそうです。その後アメリカに在任し、最近の気持ちの変化により辞職。そして次の目標は動物愛護だそうです。
お二方ともとても素晴らしい方で、私たちは強い刺激をうけました。ありがとうございました！

Seki Seminar 2019 START!

Seki Seminar 2019 has finally started. The first Seminar class was held at Professor Seki’s research office. We couldn’t believe the warmest atmosphere of the class where we even enjoyed pizzas and chocolates.
This year, the seminar is composed of only 5 students. This number is the second smallest in the seminar’s history. However, each student is highly motivated, talented, and cheerful. In Japan the new era, REIWA will start in a month. Seki Seminar also has just begun a new era which is completely different from previous years. We are really looking forward to the activities from now on!
One of our main activities is the 2-weeks oversea training program in September which may be conducted in Nepal (and Thailand). We will try our best for each of our goals including raising cross-cultural competence and English skills.

Before the seminar class, professor Seki’s former students he taught at Niigata University, Ms. Airi Kaneko and Ms. Yoko Satsuma, visited his office.
They met Prof. Seki again for the first time after their graduation 15 years ago!, We got super motivated after listening to their life history. They are so amazing! We want to be like them in the future. Ms. Kaneko and Ms. Satsuma, thank you so much for visiting us.
