異文化コミュニケーション基礎編３「多様な価値観」

　今年度の関ゼミが始まって1ヵ月が経ちますが、徐々に緊張もほぐれ、和やかな雰囲気でしかし切磋琢磨しながら学習に励んでいます。

本日の授業「様々な価値観」というタイトルで世の中には多様な価値観が存在するということを多くの例を参考にして学びました。著名な文化学者であるニューメキシコ大学のコンドン教授は価値観を、「良い」と教えられたこと、いかに行動すべきか、奨励されている物事、正しい選択、認められている事、この５つについての基準だと定義しているようです。この定義を授業で習った例を交えて紹介しましょう。

授業後にみんなで椅子の足をあげて写真撮影！！！あなたはこの写真を見てどう思いますか？？

子供の時に嘘をつくなと言われたことはありますか？小さいことは誰しも素直に物事を言ってしまうものです。しかし、大人になるにつれ、思ったことを口に出さないことが増えると思います。これは、他者の価値観に配慮した行動をするようになるからです。

　また、この学者は子供が椅子の前足を挙げて座っている事への注意の仕方について、アメリカと日本の教師の怒り方の差にも注目しました。この学者が関わったアメリカの教師は不安定な座り方が危ないということの着目したのに対して日本の教師は行儀の悪さに着目する人が多かったとのことです。

　これらの例は、人の言動はその人や集団の価値観に影響を受けていること、そして他者の価値観を尊重するようになると言動も変化してくることを示しているそうです。他にも、価値観生まれた時から形成が始まる心の奥底にあるものであり、大人になってから変更するのは極めて困難なものだということも理解できました。

　授業後には、授業で取り上げた「子供が椅子の、前足を上げる。」の話にちなんで、椅子の足を上げている上の写真をゼミ生全員で撮ってみました。皆さんはこの写真を見てどう思いますか？

　One month has passed since we have started studying together for the 2018 Seki Seminar. Today’s lecture was about “various values.” We learned that there are different value systems in the world. One of the cultural studies specialists claims that senses of value are developed based on what you have learned from your families or caretakers when you were very young. Those values include what is good and what is bad or rude, and what you are supposed to do in certain situations.
　When you are a child, you tend to voice your thought honestly without taking the feeling of others into consideration. However, as you grow up, you gradually became hesitant to express your feelings honestly because you are disciplined to care about what others think when you show your feelings honestly.

　According to the specialist, American and Japanese kindergarten teachers felt differently when they see their students sitting on a chair, raising the front leg of the chair up. American teachers pay attention to the dangerous sitting arrangement and think it is dangerous. On the other hand, Japanese teachers tend to pay attention to their rude manners.  This episode clearly shows that the human mind is strongly influenced by his/her culture.
