関ゼミ2017の振り返り（２）多様な社会で通じ合えること

大学二年目を迎えて新たな挑戦としてゼミに所属することにした。
それが関ゼミだった。このゼミは他のゼミと違い、約半数が留学生というかなり特殊なゼミだった。そこにワクワク感を覚えて専攻を決めた。一年を過ごしてこの選択に間違いはなかったと感じる。ゼミ生の能力の高さだけでも強いインパクトがあったが、それ以上にネパール研修はもっと強烈な体験の日々だった。何故ならば、初めての海外渡航で、アジア最貧国とも言われる後発発展途上国。そしてこんなにも長い期間、現地の人達と英語で交流することも初めてだった。
その中で今までの自分は"伝える"という行為があまりにも疎かになっていたことを実感した。日本人が得意とする空気を読むなど、言わずに伝わることは他では通用しない。しっかりと自分の意思を伝えないと通じ合えなかった。相手は国が違えば文化も異なる。そのような環境が増えている昨今で相手をリスペクトすることの重要さを学んだ。
これからもこの学びを元に多種多様な人たちと共に、異文化を乗り越えて笑い合うことが僕の目標だ。

Reflection on TKU Seki Seminar (２) "Understanding cultures through various societies"

When my sophomore year started, I decided to take a seminar class as a new challenge.
As I was looking for a seminar, I found one was called Seki Seminar. It was very interesting because about half of the members are international students. It seemed like an exciting seminar, so I decided to apply for it. Looking back, that was a good choice.

The high level of language abilities that the other members have amazed me at the very beginning of the semester. However, I was much more overwhelmed by the Nepal trip last September. It was my first trip to a foreign country, and it is one of the least developed countries. I hadn’t spent time with foreigners or spoken in English that long. Through the experiences in Nepal, I realized that it is important to express myself. I figured out understanding what others are thinking without asking or telling is only among Japanese people. I had trouble communicating with them because we have different cultures.

This experience has allowed me to learn that respecting other cultures is important. My objective is to overcome cultural differences and to smile and be happy with people who have different cultures.
